A river is a ribbon-like body of water that flows from high land downhill. It is a geographical feature. Gravity is what causes a river to flow. A river can be wide and deep, or shallow enough. A flowing body of water that is smaller than a river is called a creek or stream. The largest rivers can be thousands of miles long. As the water flows along the river bed the land is worn away, it erodes. Erosion of rivers can form geologic wonders like the Grand Canyon. All rivers have a starting point where water begins its flow, the source. Water can come from rainfall or snowmelt in mountains, but it can also bubble up from groundwater. The other end of a river is called its mouth, where water empties into a larger body of water, such as a lake or ocean. A tributary is a river or stream that flows into another stream, river, or lake. The river loses its velocity as it gets lower and deposits different particles or sediments at its mouth.
